Architecture Bootstrap
If an architectural approach has not been taken within an Enterprise, this document provides some guidance on moving towards an architectural approach to change and transformation.
Starting up or identifying a program.
This stage in the change or transformation roughs out the requirements for change and the scope of the organization that needs to change.
- Identify the top management team and the scope of the organization
- Agree a project management process ... (a basic one). (use one if it already exists).
- Form an architecture team
- Collect current elements and assess fit (quick collection and assessment)
- Establish a plan (based upon this bootstrap approach)
Understand the typical systems that will change (new or changed). Using the systems identified in the Enterprise as a System of Systems (SoS) provides a good starting point for naming the systems that will change. These systems are based upon management models that allow managers to understand their role in the change. See the following document:

Architecture Description Frameworks
Architecture Description Frameworks provide the instructions for creating an architecture description for an Enterprise or part of an enterprise. There are a number of types of Architecture Description Frameworks:
-
Organization Specific Architecture Description Frameworks (for a specific type of organization).
-
TOGAF (The Open Group Architecture Framework) combining business and it architectures.
-
Military based Architecture Frameworks in states of unification
-
A Unified Architecture Framework UAF.
-
A simple management friendly Architecture Framework: EntSoSAF. Link to the Enterprise (SoS) Architecture Description Framework
Where external standards or best practice methods are to be integrated into the architecture, see the Integrated Management System addition to the standard architecture description frameworks.

Implementation of the Architecture Capability.
Architecting is a management system capability that must be established and maintained along with any of the other capabilities used in the enterprise or organization.
Implementation of the Changes.
Program and / or Project Management capabilities are needed to implement the changes. The life cycle for the elements that are to be created or changed will be identified in the Architecture Description.
Each type of system will have their own life cycle.
The program management capability based upon Managing Successful Programmes is already based upon capability change and improvement. This is an easy way to establish well structured change programmes.
Transformation and Change Guide.
See the steps included in the transformation and change guide for further guidance.
